Nick Jonas knows a thing or two about surviving the break up of a popular band. So, when the youngest Jonas commented about Zayn Malik leaving One Direction, he was very frank about the situation because he’s been in a similar situation.

According to E! Online , who interviewed the model and solo artist, Jonas empathized with the position Zayn was in and the tough decision he had to make to leave One Direction.

“It’s always tough. You know, there’s never an easy time to make a decision like that. I commend him for doing what he feels is right for him and you got to stay true to yourself.”

Back in 2013, Nick Jonas and his brothers had to deal with announcing their split to their fans, who had been following their career since Disney. It was a tough time, but the youngest Jonas brother has survived and grown out of his boyish image thanks to a modeling contract and his top 40 hit “Jealous.”

In October of 2013, the oldest Jonas brother Kevin put out a statement about their split, in addition to canceling their 19-city tour.

“It’s over for now,” said Kevin, while Nick added, “It’s really hard to say ‘forever.’ We’re closing a chapter, for sure.”

Nick also sat down with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts to address the problems he’s had with the band.

“In a nutshell, I said, ‘Look, I feel like we’ve had some complications within the group for a long time without addressing them. I think this train will fall off the tracks without really getting real about some of the concerns and some of the limitations that we may feel as individuals in the group.’ It was a tough conversation.”

It was rumored that the trio had split due to creative differences. Meanwhile, it’s rumored that the youngest JoBro said he felt “trapped” by the band, and most thought that meant he needed to break free on his own. Before the band split, Nick was already spreading his wings on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying . His performance received a ton of buzz and positive reviews.

As for One Direction’s Zayn, it’s said that he needs to be a normal 20-something and live a life out of the spotlight. That said, right after the news hit, Zayn was pictured heading into the studio on his own, and most fans speculated that he wanted to split from One Direction so he can go solo. While no one has confirmed this news, it wouldn’t be too surprising, as every boy band in the last two decades have experienced something similar. The only two to really break out and sustain success are ‘N Sync’s Justin Timberlake and Nick Jonas.
