New York Knicks Rumors: Former No. 2 Pick Signs With Knicks

New York Knicks rumors have the team signing Derrick Williams now. The Knicks will likely have Williams come off the bench in the 2015-16 NBA season, adding depth to a roster that really needed it. A report from Chris Broussard at ESPN states that Williams has agreed to a two-year contract worth $10 million. Williams was the No. 2 overall selection of the 2011 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was later traded to the Sacramento Kings, where he spent most of the past two NBA seasons.

Last season , with the Kings, Williams played 74 games, with all but six coming as a reserve. He averaged 19.8 minutes a night, with averages of 8.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game to show for himself. On his career, Derrick Williams is 42.9 percent from the field, 30.1 percent from three-point range, and 70.3 percent from the free throw line. He hasn’t lived up to his billing out of the University of Arizona, but he could still provide some valuable minutes with the Knicks’ second unit.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr , these New York Knicks rumors follow several other contract agreements from the past week. That includes plans to sign center Robin Lopez and shooting guard Arron Afflalo. The Knicks had the money to add a few more role players to an offense that is still led by Carmelo Anthony, so team president Phil Jackson took the easy route by picking up Williams. At just 24-year-old when the 2015-16 NBA season begins, it’s still possible he could improve on the court.

Though the Knicks haven’t landed any of the big name free agents like DeAndre Jordan, LaMarcus Aldridge, or Kevin Love, the team has certainly made some intelligent signings. Adding players like Robin Lopez and Arron Afflalo should help out Carmelo Anthony a lot, plus they have two good players coming on from the 2015 NBA Draft. Though this might not seem like a championship caliber squad just yet, the Knicks are now good enough to get back to the postseason.

There are certain to be a few more players added to the mix by Phil Jackson before the NBA offseason comes to a close. He still has money to work with under the salary cap, so it shouldn’t be surprising to fans if there are more New York Knicks rumors over the next week. Since there are still a few more days until players can officially sign new contracts, anything can happen.
