New York City, NY – Two boys were rescued Tuesday afternoon after they fell through the ice in Central Park. The boys are now in the hospital in stable condition.

The New York City Fire Department received the call for the incident at approximately 2 pm. According to New York 1 , two boys, a 19- and 20-year-old, fell through the ice at the pond in the southeast corner of the Central Park.

Nellie Laskow, 24, who works at the Waffles and Dinges food cart in the park, said:

“I just heard everyone yelling down there. They were being pulled out on a sled with two ropes around it.”

According to the Wall Street Journal , a park employee who witnessed the rescue said one of the youths broke through the ice about 40 feet from the edge. The employee speculated that the boy had been trying to reach an island in the middle of the water:

“He had a look of panic in his eyes. Everybody was yelling at him to stay calm. The only thing he was shouting was ‘I’m cold, I’m really cold.’”

It could have been worse, as previously reported by The Inquisitr , as in Northern Mexico, the dead bodies of a Mexican band had been found in a well.

A law-enforcement official said of the boys rescued from the icy water:

“The ice cracked and they fell in.”

The police officer was the first to arrive, jumping into the water to rescue the boys from the frigid pond. Police identified the boys as Bronx natives Latif Ali, 20 years old, and Ayang Nyamaa, 19. They both received criminal court summonses for unlawful ice activity.

Elsewhere in New York, as reported by The Inquisitr , a woman claims she was evicted from her apartment because she has cancer. She was apparently left in the cold.

Ali and Nyamaa are expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday. The police officer who had jumped in to the rescue has been treated and released.

Do you think the boys rescued from the ice in New York City had been there by accident, or had they known they were breaking the law?
