New Video Game Releases For The Week Of January 25, 2015

January is almost over, however, there are a few new video game releases for the week of January 25 that need to be addressed before we enter the commercially driven month of love that is February. What do zombies, bounty hunters, Tim Schaffer, and ironically sexualized anime characters have in common? They all have games coming out this week, and we cover them below.

While video game developers may not have the public mind space of, say, Steven Spielberg, Tim Schaffer is one of the earliest icons in PC gaming. And in the new video game releases for this week of January 25, one of the most beloved point-and-click adventures, Grim Fandango , is finding new life for its noir-inspired story of death.

Although Grim Fandango was considered a commercial failure in 1998 when it originally released on Windows computers, it was a critical darling that is still featured on most “Favorite Video Game” lists. Combing The Maltese Falcon and Cassablanca in an Aztec afterlife setting seems to go together like oil and water. However, the effect of the point-and-click mechanic, along with the narrative delivery, overcame this odd pairing to become one of the most sought after remaster projects from the old LucasArts library now owned by Disney. Tim Schaffer, who served as lead on the project, obtained the rights to remaster the game, and it releases this week on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux platforms.

Life is Strange is our second game worth mentioning for the new video game releases list for this week. Developed by Dontnod Entertainment, who developed cult hit Remember Me , is releasing the first episode of Life is Strange this week. The adventure video game is being published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 as well as the Windows PC platform.

The plot of Life is Strange centers around Maxine Caulfiled, a photography student who, for some reason unbeknownst to us, has the ability to rewind time in order to tap into what is commonly called the “ Butterfly Effect .” After five years of being away from her home town, Maxine returns to Oregon and her best friend Chloe Price. Chloe’s father died while Maxine was gone, and Chloe found solace in a new friend, Rachel Amber, who has gone missing quite mysteriously. The premise of the game is that Maxine and Chloe decide to hunt through the secrets of their home town to discover the fate of Rachel.

The final game we want to note is the re-release of Metroid Prime: Trilogy for the Wii U. This digital repackage of the classic Wii trilogy is not an enhanced version but rather a cheap way ($10 on the first week, $20 after) for owners of the Wii U to experience one of the most critically acclaimed shooters on the original Wii as well as a beloved entry into the traditionally 2D franchise. The original game for the Wii is fetching upwards of $100 on eBay, so unless you really think you need that shiny metal case, you can pick up the game for $10 this week on the Nintendo eShop.

The Inquisitr publishes a list of all the new video game releases every Sunday, and you can check out the previous week’s entry here .
