Happy National Donut Day! The ever-so popular fried delight is celebrating its honorary day with free donuts throughout the United States and popular chains all over the world are joining in the fun. The tradition dates back to the 1930s, and it’s been held on the first Friday of June ever since.
The Salvation Army began a “Doughnut Day” in 1938 to recognize women who served the delicious treat to soldiers during World War I, but it’s now grown into a worldwide celebration and there are many great deals out there to grab a couple freebies while you’re out.
Krispy Kreme , one of the most popular chains, is giving away a free donut on Friday without the need of any other purchase. Their top competitor in Dunkin’ Donuts has the same giveaway, but you’ll have to purchase a beverage to get the freebie from them.
Tim Hortons is giving away a free donut with any purchase as long as you print out their coupon on Facebook, which you can find here. In celebration of National Donut Day, Entenmann’s has set up a website where you can find the hot spots around the United States, and they’ve also launched a Donut Day sweepstakes.
The baked goods company didn’t stop there, as they also have hundreds of other prizes you can win on the site, which is located at donutdayusa.com. Enjoying the sweet dessert food was originally considered a breakfast staple, but it’s now common to find customers picking up a “hot-n-ready” box during any time throughout the day.
From a quick snack before bed to a quick pick-me-up when you wake up in the morning, donuts have driven sales for companies across the nation and have also become a premier menu item at some restaurants and fast food stops.
