Nap Nanny Recall: Stores Agree To Pull 150,000 Infant Recliners

Some of the nation’s largest stores have agreed to a recall of 150,000 Nap Nanny infant recliners. The recall is a voluntary move by retailers following the reported deaths of several infants, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Bed Bath & Beyond, Amazon, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, and Diapers.com are all taking action at the request of the CPSC. The move follows failure at an attempt to force a recall from the company that makes the Nap Nanny recliners.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Consumer Product Safety Commission previously tried to reach a voluntary recall plan with the product’s maker but were unsuccessful. In early December the CPSC took the matter a step further, filing a civil lawsuit against Baby Matters LLC hoping to force the issue.

Included in the voluntary recall are three Nap Nanny products: the Generation One, Generation Two, and Chill models sold between 2009 and 2012. The CPSC believes these models contain “defects in design, warnings and instructions that pose a substantial risk of injury or death to infants.”

According to The Huffington Post , The Nap Nanny is meant to mimic the shape of a baby car seat. The elevation of the infant in such seats is supposedly helpful in reducing problems like gas and acid reflux.

On Thursday the Consumer Product Safety Commission said there have been numerous reports of babies falling out of the Nap Nanny despite the recliner’s harness being in place. There have also been five infant deaths allegedly related to the product.

The CPSC encourages parents affected by the recall to check return policies with participating retailers.

Will you be one of the consumers affected by the recall of 150,000 Nap Nanny recliners?
