Even though Birdman won the top prize at this year’s Oscars, the same can’t be said about the upcoming MTV Movie Awards. That night will belong to one of the big, mainstream blockbusters of last year.

The nominees for this year’s MTV Movie Awards ceremony were released on Wednesday, and the Oscar-winning film was nominated for Best Female Performance (Emma Stone) and Best Fight (Edward Norton vs. Michael Keaton). But it didn’t get recognized for the ceremony’s top prize: Movie of the Year. However, four other films that competed against Birdman at the Oscars did get nominated in that category. Those four films are American Sniper, Boyhood, Selma, and Whiplash .

As the Inquisitr previously reported, there was plenty of criticism for the lack of nominations that Selma received at the Oscars. But the MTV Movie Awards not only recognized the film for the top prize, but it also nominated David Oyelowo in the Breakthrough Performance category. Oyelowo will compete against Ansel Elgort, Rosamund Pike, Dylan O’Brien, and Ellar Coltrane for the award.

Some of the other actors and actresses who were nominated for Oscars are also being recognized by the MTV Movie Awards. They are Bradley Cooper, Reese Witherspoon, Rosamund Pike, and Steve Carell.

Eddie Redmayne, who won Best Actor for Theory of Everything , is being recognized for Best On-Screen Transformation at the MTV Movie Awards. Redmayne will compete against Elizabeth Banks, Zoe Saldana, Steve Carell, and Ellar Coltrane.

It’s a three-way tie in terms of which film lead the pack of nominees. The Fault in Our Stars , Guardians of the Galaxy , and Neighbors are all nominated for seven awards each, including Movie of the Year.

One of the things that the MTV Movie Awards does differently from other ceremonies is recognize movies from the previous year and a select few from this year. Kevin Hart is nominated in the Best Comedic Performance category for Top Five , and Jennifer Lopez is nominated for Best Scared-As-S**t Performance for The Boy Next Door . Both films were released in January.

Sean O’Connell at Cinema Blend wrote that he’s uncertain how The Boy Next Door qualified for a ceremony that recognizes movies from the previous year.

“Forty days. That’s how long Jennifer Lopez’s sultry, cheesy thriller The Boy Next Door has been in theaters. It came out in 2015, and still qualifies for this year’s MTV Movie Awards, alongside movies like Boyhood , Birdman and Whiplash . Why? No clue.”

Those who want to vote in the MTV Movie Awards can do so by visiting MovieAwards.MTV.com . The voting session is open now until April 11.

The MTV Movie Awards airs Sunday, April 12 at 8 p.m.
