Everton has confirmed that manager David Moyes will leave the club at the end of the season with the intention of joining Manchester United .

Moyes is the frontrunner for the United job after Sir Alex Ferguson announced that he will retire when the current campaign comes to an end.

Everton released a statement on Thursday that confirmed Moyes’ exit and also revealed the Scotsman’s desire to join the Red Devils.

“Everton can confirm that David Moyes will leave the club at the end of the season. The manager met chairman Bill Kenwright and confirmed his desire to join Manchester United.

“The chairman, on behalf of the club, would like to place on record his thanks to David for the massive contribution he has made to Everton since his arrival in March 2002.”

Moyes took over from Walter Smith and directed the club to safety after it flirted with relegation for most of the 2001-2002 season.

He led the Toffees to four European campaigns and will end his tenure with over 500 games under his belt at Goodison Park.

Moyes is the heavy favorite to replace Ferguson at Manchester United after the 71 year old shocked many by announcing he will retire at the end of the season.

Moyes will have enormous shoes to fill as Fergie won 13 league titles and two Champions League crowns during his wildly successful spell at Old Trafford.

United could make an announcement later on Thursday regarding Ferguson’s successor and may have already let the cat out of the bag when they posted confirmation of Moyes’ arrival before quickly removing the message.

Everton did reveal that Moyes will still be in charge of the club’s last two games of the season against West Ham and Chelsea.

However, it’s only a matter of time before Manchester United officially confirms that David Moyes will be the next manager of the club.
