A mother in Florida was arrested after her 10-year-old was discovered naked and drunk, wandering alone in the streets.
Nedra Byrd, 31, faces child neglect charges after a nearby couple alerted police about the intoxicated 10-year-old.
Amanda Roesch, who helped take care of the boy before police arrived, told reporters:
“He was so intoxicated he didn’t realize that he didn’t have any clothes on.”
Nedra Byrd was found asleep on her couch. The Huffington Post reports that when police woke Byrd, she told them she was “drunk as hell,” then fell back asleep.
When asked by detectives what he had been drinking, the 10-year-old told them brandy. More concerning, he said his mother gave him four shots. According to local news station WPTV , the boy had a blood alcohol level of .108 when tested. The legal limit in Florida is .08.
Byrd was arrested at the scene and charged with child neglect for not only giving her 10-year-old son alcohol, but letting him leave the house, where he was found alone, wandering and naked.
Roesch shared what the boy told her before police came:
“This little boy, he said all I want for my mommy is to go to rehab and to get anger management, because mommy drinks to feel better ’cause she’s mad.”
Byrd, who was released on $1,000 bail Friday evening, likely faces the same punishment as a New York mother who packed her son guns and ammunition for lunch . Child Protective Services took her boy away. Another man recently lost his job for slapping a baby on a plane .
