‘Mortal Kombat X’ Will Let You Play DLC Characters, Even If You Don’t Own Them

The launch of NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat X is just around the corner, so it only seems fit that more great news for players should come out days before the game releases.

It is well known that Mortal Kombat X will let players control a pretty sizable roster of “Kombatants.” The Inquisitr has reported on multiple additions to the Mortal Kombat lineup, including horror-film icon Jason Voorhees and sci-fi movie favorite Predator . Most games would require that you purchase these extra characters before you can actually play them in game. Well, Mortal Kombat X seems to be taking a different approach.

According to Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, as you complete the “Premiere Towers” in Mortal Kombat X, you can face, and play as, the DLC characters . This is possible even if you haven’t purchased the extra fighters.

MKX Sneak Peek: You can complete Premiere towers that feature (and let U play) DLC characters even if you haven’t purchased that character!

The “Premiere Towers” is a Tower challenge that hearkens back to older Mortal Kombat games: Towers rotate out regularly, and so it seems you won’t be locked out of competing in the challenges just because you haven’t paid for the DLC characters. In fact, some players may use this as a way to test out whether or not they enjoy playing as the DLC character before they spend the money on a DLC pack.

This type of DLC trend is actually rather successful for games that utilize this method. MOBA games such as League of Legends and DOTA 2 will frequently rotate out champions and characters for the player base to try before they purchase a new character. By allowing players of Mortal Kombat X to essentially take the Predator, Tanya, or Jason out for a test drive, they encourage them to purchase DLC if they like how they handle. Also, it keeps each player engaged by never locking fans out of content just because they haven’t spent as much money on Mortal Kombat X’s DLC as others.

Mortal Kombat X takes place 25 years after the events of the Mortal Kombat reboot that released in 2011. Some fighters in Mortal Kombat X will seem familiar, while others have been created entirely for the new game, such as Cassie Cage, Tremor, and D’Vorah. Mortal Kombat X’s competitive season was kicked off yesterday with the MKX ESL FATAL 8 Exhibition tournament. Eight of the best Mortal Kombat X players were invited to compete in the inaugural tournament, with Dominique “cR|Sonic Fox” McLean taking the tourney, dropping only one game, according to IGN .

Mortal Kombat X will release on Xbox One, PC, and PS4 April 14.
