As The Inquisitr previously reported, 14-year-old Jaylen Fryberg opened fire at Marysville-Pilchuck High School on Friday in Marysville, Washington, killing one person and injuring four others before turning the gun on himself.
KIRO-TV is now reporting that the shooting spree was halted by a teacher who intervened. Erick Cervantes, a student at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, said he watched the whole thing unfold.
“I believe she’s actually the real hero. She’s the one that intercepted him with the gun. He tried either reloading or tried aiming at her. She tried moving his hand away and he tried shooting and shot himself in the neck.”
Megan Silberberger, a first-year social studies teacher at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, has been identified as the person who stepped in during the shooting to stop Fryberg. Cervantes said that Silberberger and the shooter didn’t have too much of a struggle before he shot himself.
“She heard the gunshots first and she came in running through the door, right next to it. It wasn’t (a) wrestle. She just grabbed his arm, and it lasted like two seconds, and I heard another shot.”
The Seattle Times is also reporting that an unnamed cafeteria worker at the Marysville high school tried to stop Fryberg during the shooting. However, even though the rumor was confirmed by detectives, no other details were released.
Randy Davis, president of the Marysville Education Association, said he spoke to Silberberger after the shooting took place, but they didn’t discuss how it went down or what provoked her to intervene.
“She just indicated to me that she needed some time, and in her voice I felt that she did. She said, ‘Right now, I just want some time to deal with this and be with my family.’”
Davis also praised the first-year Marysville school teacher for her actions.
“I’m not even sure why Megan was in the cafeteria at the time. I think it was just a teacher going through, getting her lunch or coming from lunch. I’m completely amazed. There’s two ways anybody could go in that situation. You can flee or you can go toward it. Obviously, we’re glad she did what she did and thankful.”
The one student who was killed in the shooting at Marysville-Pilchuck High School has been identified as Zoe Galasso, according to The Seattle Times . Shaylee Chuckulnaskit and Gia Soriano were the two other female victims in the shooting and were listed in critical condition at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett. The two boys that Fryberg shot were his cousins Nate Hatch and Andrew Fryberg. Hatch was listed in critical condition, and Fryberg was listed in serious condition at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center.
