With a score of 7-5, 6-1, the duo successfully defeated Russian pair Katerina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the championship match for women’s doubles. The two started a little slow in the tournament and garnered an initial score line of 2-5 and 3-5. Eventually, Hingis and Mirza built their momentum and triumphed over their opponents.

“They started off really well, and we just had to get our rhythm and start hitting. We were like almost in the beginning thinking, OK, they were going to hand it over to us. But they’re not, because they have nothing to lose from last week, and we have to prove it again,” Hingis said

Last week Hingis and her partner defeated the same Russian duo at the Indian Wells tournament. Furthermore, Hingis pointed out a vital element in their team. She said, “I think it’s the most important thing that we never stop believing that we are a great team.” Hingis and Mirza have been on a roll and evidently, the two make a great team. They have yet to lose a tournament since they paired up.

“We just tried to keep telling each other to enjoy the struggle. Last week everything came very, very easily to us – we didn’t lose more than four games in a set. Over here we were down, and we were panicking. It was like, ‘Oh my God, we’re not playing well.’ We just weren’t used to that,” Mirza shared .

Hingis also acknowledged her partner’s father, Imran Mirza , who has been supportive of the duo. She credited their win to the helpful tips provided by Mirza’s father who was also present during the match.

“Today the coaching really turned it around – your dad came on court,” Hingis told her partner. Meanwhile, Mirza is now close to becoming the world’s number one female tennis player. At the present, she is only 145 points away from being the best. “Very few get there. I’m obviously very, very close. I’m human, and every match that I’m playing, of course, I’m thinking and hoping that it happens,” Mirza said.
