Mariah Carey has music critics and entertainment blogs everywhere asking the same question: Are we back in the 90s?
With her most recent single release, titled “Infinity,” Carey has given listeners an example of a throw-back, nostalgia-filled song, and some critics are not fans.
Take this article from Vanity Fair , for example. The magazine, which called the song “dipped in nostalgia” had this to say .
“…between the corny (like Fritos) lyrics and the breathy Carey vocal runs, we’re right back in the plaid shirt-wearing, tire swing-frolicking days of yore.”
The Huffington Post added a similar thought about Mariah Carey’s new single , calling the song “a little hokey.”
Perhaps a throw-back to more popular times is what Mariah Carey was hoping for. As the Inquisitr noted Sunday, Carey hasn’t exactly had much success with her last two albums, titled Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel and Me I Am Mariah: The Elusive Chanteuse . In fact, Inquisitr writer Daryl Deino called them “ worldwide bombs .”
“Infinity” will be featured on the diva’s newest album, called Mariah Carey #1 to Infinity . The album is a greatest hits compilation, and “Infinity” is the only new song on the compilation. The song was released Sunday evening on iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube.
Mariah Carey is said to have released the lyric video for “Infinity” as a precursor to a more traditional music video, and Carey’s entire compilation album is set to be released on May 1. Many media outlets speculate that both the single and the compilation album are part of an effort to promote her Las Vegas show, which she performs at Caesar’s Palace.
The song and the compilation album mark the first time that Mariah Carey has worked with Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid since Carey’s 2005 album, The Emancipation of Mimi . That album was a best seller with Reid as executive producer.
While media outlets such as The Huffington Post and Vanity Fair were critical of Mariah Carey’s newest single, fans seemed to come out to support Carey’s newest endeavor, and Carey’s new single was trending on Twitter with the hashtag #Infinity.
One fan looked forward to listening to the song all night, while Max TV called “Infinity” one of her best singles to date.
