Hunger Games and music fans have expressed disbelief over the omission of Lorde’s “Yellow Flicker Beat” from Oscar contention.
The song, penned specifically for the latest installment of the Hunger Games series, Mockingjay Part I , had previously been recognized with a nomination at last month’s Golden Globes for “Best Original Song.”
Often considered a precursor of Oscar nods to come, the Golden Globes seemed to set the stage for Lorde’s Academy Award run, but when yesterday’s nominees were announced, she didn’t make the cut.
Critics from MTV News were astounded, reminding everyone not only the success of the song which is still thriving on Billboard’s Top 100, but of the remarkably young age of the singer who was tasked with the undertaking of such a project.
“Lorde — she’s 18. She’s 18 and was asked to curate the entire soundtrack to ‘ The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 .’”
Vanity Fair included the rejection in its “8 Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2015 Oscar Nominations,” lamenting that “it would have been fun to see what Lorde would wear to the Oscars.”
The Hunger Games franchise is no stranger to being snubbed by the Academy, despite its blockbuster financial success in theaters, with Mockingjay Part 1 making over $300 million since its November debut, according to Box Office Mojo .
Other than Taylor Swift’s “Safe and Sound,” which also received a nod from the Golden Globes in 2013, the little gold man named Oscar continues to look the other way.
Perhaps the singer can take solace in knowing that Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t nominated, either, for her vocal talents on Mockingjay Part I . Just last month, the Hunger Games star’s rendition of “The Hanging Tree” was morphed into a dance remix due to its overwhelming success on the charts . And if an Oscar favorite like Jennifer Lawrence can’t even get nominated, well, who can?
So just as Jennifer Aniston is left with simply eating cake instead of being recognized by the Academy for her role in the movie Cake , or the entire cast of Selma may be tempted to march in protest rather than up the stairs of the Dolby Theater next month for the lack of props to actor David Oyewolo or director Ava DuVernay, it seems Lorde will have to have to carry her tune elsewhere. It’s okay Lorde. You can console yourself with your Grammys.
