Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard didn’t want to be married until everyone in their home state could.
So last year, when the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage act and officially legalized same-sex marriage, Kristen decided to buck social norms and publicly propose to Dax via Twitter . They had already been engaged for a few years (Dax popped the question first), but the legalization of same-sex marriage marked the real countdown to their nuptials.
“We’ve been very vocal about not wanting to be married in a state that doesn’t allow that right to all of its citizens,” Bell told Celebuzz in 2012. “We’ll wait until California gets on the right side of history.”
This weekend the couple followed though with their plans, traveling to the Beverly Hills County Clerk’s office in Los Angeles to officially tie the knot .
Witnesses said Kristen and Dax were just going to the office to get a marriage licence, but after a court employee informed them that they could be married right there they jumped at the chance.
It seemed like the perfect wedding for Kristen Bell, who had expressed her desire for a small affair.
“I feel like we get enough attention in our daily lives and we just want something sort of private that involves pen and paper.”
A spur-of-the-moment affair seemed the only way to go for Kristen and Dax, who said it was only “laziness” holding them back from tying the knot .
“But we have every intention to. We have every intention to. We wanna sign those papers,” Kristen said. “And I think we just found out that you can do it online now. What if we got married online? Print it out: ‘You guys, married! Married, everybody!’ It’s just out of laziness that we haven’t actually done it yet.”
Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell already have a daughter together, Lincoln, who was born in March.
