Katy Perry is dropping huge new details about her upcoming new album and revealing exactly what she thought of Coldplay, Beyoncé, and Bruno Mars’ recent Super Bowl halftime show .

Speaking out about the follow-up to her 2013 release, Prism , Katy revealed that she’s still in the “research and development” phase when it comes to her as-yet-untitled fifth studio album, meaning it could still be a few months before Katy Perry fans are treated to any new music from the pop superstar.

Katy Perry made the big new music admission in a candid new interview with the New York Times , where the site quizzed her on just how far along in the album process she is.

“I’m in the research and development phase,” Perry confirmed to the site during the recent interview ahead of the Spotify pre-Grammy party she hosted on February 14, where Katy revealed that she tends to release new music “in a more traditional way” that includes a three-year cycle between releases.

“Once I start writing them, I know exactly where I’ll be in spring of 2018,” Perry told the New York Times of the intense promotion and touring schedule that follows the release of a new album. “That can get a little bit like ‘Ugh.’ I need a little bit more freedom, especially when I’ve been doing it for this long.”

“I’ve been going at it for eight or nine years in the spotlight, and then before that there’s that decade of hustle that never gets recognized but still shows up in your wrinkles,” Katy Perry continued in the new interview, confirming that she’s currently “taking a little time” before putting new music out into the world.

“I don’t want to jump on any trends,” Katy revealed, admitting that she “just needs to evolve.”

The New York Times also quizzed Perry on her inspiration for new music, where she admitted that she thinks about connecting with her fans rather than awards or industry recognition when she’s putting together an album.

“The only thing that is on my mind when creating music is being authentic and vulnerable and making sure that it connects,” Katy confessed. “I know that it does connect because numbers don’t lie. I know that might sound a little sassy, but all I want to do is stay true to myself and dig deep to pull out some of the messages or perspectives that I have on the world.”

But while Perry is making new admissions about her own music, Katy is also revealing just how she felt about 2016’s Super Bowl halftime show, which followed her own spectacular performance in 2015.

“I thought it was cool,” Katy Perry told the New York Times of Coldplay, Beyoncé, and Bruno Mars’s big show earlier this month. “I always knew they were going to do a bit of a retrospective and bring back some artists that had done it in the past.”

“I know how intense it is to do the Super Bowl and how much it takes. There are a lot of restrictions. It’s not as easy as saying like, ‘Hey, I want Rihanna up there with me,’” Perry revealed, confessing that she actually tried to get country superstar Dolly Parton to take to the stage with her last year.

“I tried to get Dolly Parton out there,” Katy admitted, “It’s more of a communal process with the NFL and all the different artists. But I thought it was cool.”
