Kate Matrosova was found dead Monday after her plan to hike the New Hampshire mountains proved too much. Exposure to sub-zero temperatures and 100 mph winds led to the New York City resident freezing to death.

Matrosova, the wife of an investment banker, had been dropped off at the base of the mountains by her husband Sunday morning, where she had planned to hike to the top of Mount Madison alone. From there, she had planned to go through Mount Adams and Mount Jefferson, to the 6,300-foot peak of Mount Washington.

By Sunday afternoon, 32-year-old Matrosova had activated an emergency personal locator beacon, allegedly having realized she had taken on a challenge no human could handle in those conditions.

The Huffington Post says Fish and Game Lieutenant Jim Goss told the press why Kate Matrosova was tricky to locate.

“Unfortunately, a lot of the coordinates that we received over the night were all over the place within a mile circumference.”

Under those conditions, it took them several hours of searching in harsh weather. The sub-zero temperatures and 100 mph winds made searching overnight impossible, according to authorities. The National Guard flew over the area in a helicopter Monday morning and couldn’t see anything.

Fish and Game officers braved the conditions alongside Mountain Rescue Services and Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue members to finally find Kate Matrosova dead from exposure to the elements.

Jim Goss explained that the New Hampshire hiker had taken on more than she could handle hiking in the open in such conditions.

“I guess if you are gonna hike in this type of weather you need to be in a more sheltered area, not up on an open exposed ridgeline. There’s just no room for error in a place like that.”

This wasn’t Matrosova’s first encounter in harsh conditions, as pictures posted on Facebook revealed. This time, the tundra and harsh conditions proved to be too much for the adventurer.
