Joss Whedon Explains Why Loki Scene Cut From ‘Age Of Ultron’ [Spoilers]

Joss Whedon recently sat down to explain why Avengers: Age of Ultron didn’t feature the first movie’s star villain Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston. There were rumors about the trickster making a cameo appearance, and they even shot a scene, but Whedon decided to cut it in the end.

Whedon explained himself to MTV News .

“We did shoot something, but it didn’t play. The movie has so much. It’s so filled. We didn’t want it to feel overstuffed. I really wanted to have Loki in it, but I understood the decision that there were now too many voices in the chorus.”

A movie featuring the original Avengers team and a whole pantheon of new superheroes in a slightly over two-hour time frame certainly risks being “overstuffed.”

Still, as Entertainment Weekly explained, Loki’s presence is felt throughout the movie. For example, Loki’s scepter instigates the movie’s first fight. Likewise, Thor’s vision of a crumbling Asgard brings up memories of the villain, although he doesn’t appear.

In any case, the film seems to be doing fine without seeing Loki. As previously reported by the Inquisitr , Age of Ultron is already on course to beat the original Avengers movie in the box office, which is no easy task considering the first movie’s $1.5 billion worldwide earnings makes it the third highest-grossing film of all time. (In case you were wondering, Avatar is the highest grossing film with roughly $2.8 billion followed by Titanic with about $2.2 billion — without adjusting for inflation).

As for Joss Whedon, he’s getting out of the superhero business, according to an interview with Entertainment Weekly .

Whedon helped create an interlocking web of movies, bringing together Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury, Hawkeye, and the Hulk.

Whedon explained that it was just becoming too much for him.

“This has definitely been the hardest work of my career. Every movie I have ever made has been an ensemble piece of increasingly enormous proportions. That many balls in the air, it’s only going to get bigger with Infinity War … I was like, I’m not going to be able to give it what I would need to. It’s a young man’s game.”

Brothers Anthony Russo and Joe Russo will take over the directing role for the two-part sequel Avengers: Infinity War .

For those people who missed Loki in Joss Whedon’s Age of Ultron , they will get their fix in Infinity Wars and Thor: Ragnorak .
