Johnny Depp and Jennifer Lawrence’s latest films haven’t even been released yet, and there is already a buzz that the two talented actors will be in Oscar contention.

Depp’s latest effort portrays him as drug kingpin Whitey Bulger in the film Black Mass, which is to be screened for the first time this Friday at the Venice Film Festival. The notable actor, who has come close to winning an Academy Award, has yet to hold an Oscar in his grasp. However, speculations are rampant that Depp’s latest performance will quite possibly achieve him his first award from the Academy. To take on the role of Whitey, Depp had to transform his appearance, use a modulated voice, and pop in a pair of baby blue contacts. The Boston Herald reminds that Johnny is definitely in need of a win with this anticipated film.

“For Depp, his first Oscar would be just the ticket to declare his career back on track after a string of box-office bombs that include ‘Mortdecai,’ ‘Transcendence’ and ‘The Lone Ranger,’ i.e. any recent flick where he doesn’t wear a pirate costume.”

Golden Derby also is certain in their prediction that this is Johnny’s time to shine, as the publication has no doubt that it will be Depp who walks away with the Best Actor Oscar.

“Johnny Depp (will win best actor for) ‘Black Mass’. He has several nominations under his belt, and this looks like a return to form for him.”

Also the subject of Oscar buzz is the charismatic beauty Jennifer Lawrence for the movie Joy. Lawrence, who has already walked away with a Best Actress Oscar for her role in David O. Reily’s film, Silver Linings Playbook, has starred under the director’s guidance once more in the film which is based on the woman who invented the Miracle Mop.

Moviephone shares enthusiasm for the upcoming film and Jennifer’s performance, based solely on the trailer alone.

“Let us all bow down… to Katniss/Mystique, who shows so much range just in this trailer alone that they may as well ?engrave her name on an Academy Award right now.”

JLaw may be up against heavy hitters such as Cate Blanchett in Carol and Julianne Moore in Freehold. What critics suggest as being the only thing stopping Lawrence from taking the award once more is that some suggest she is too young to portray the lead character, as the Boston Herald notes.

Depp may find himself competing with the likes of Leonardo DiCAprio, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine, and Tom Hanks.
