Like the rest of the world, John Mayer sure enjoyed Katy Perry’s sharks at the Super Bowl halftime show. So much, in fact, that he decided to bring them along for his first show hosting the Late Late Show .

Now that Craig Ferguson has stepped down as host of The Late Late Show , guests have been jumping in to replace him. On Wednesday, Katy’s on-again-off-again boyfriend John Mayer sat behind the desk, sans rattlesnake mug.

The guests everyone is talking about are the two sharks from Perry’s Super Bowl performance.

During the introduction, Mayer said, “This is actually a really huge get for me… You probably saw my first guests perform during Katy Perry’s Super Bowl XLIX halftime show, now the most watched show in history. Please welcome, the Super Bowl halftime sharks!”

The best part about the whole segment is that the sharks were joined by a “shark expert,” in other words, a “marine biologist” named Carl, who rattled off humorous “shark facts” like, “The sharks don’t speak. They’re sharks, not dolphins.”

This prompted Mayer to say, “They don’t talk, but yet they dance?”

Carl then countered, “Of course they dance, they’re Super Bowl sharks.”

Then Mayer pointed out the left shark and all the attention he’s been getting.

Carl explained, “Sharks swim in pairs. Naturally there’s an alpha shark. Then the clumsy, dumber left shark flops around like a sidekick, but no less important.”

As everyone knows, Katy Perry’s left shark stole the whole show, as he tried his best to dance suggestively with Perry during his number. The left shark was eventually revealed as Katy’s backup dancer Bryan Gaw. Gaw took to Instagram to reveal himself shortly after the performance.

“Yep. The rumors are true. Yours truly. #SuperBowlXLIX #KatyPerryHalftimeShow.”

Mayer also interviewed Bravo’s Andy Cohen, and the musician voiced his opinion about the hoopla over the sharks during halftime.

“It’s something everyone can grab onto because not everyone is comfortable walking around saying that Katy Perry was amazing, so they use the sharks as kind of like, ‘Guys, I love the sharks,” and it’s like ‘You have nothing bad to say about the performance, do you?” She made the internet a kind and gentle place for the day.”

Mayer may be right, but the sharks make for some awesome memes.
