Joe Namath: Tim Tebow Is NY Jets’ Third String Quarterback

If Mark Sanchez ever gets hurt, Tim Tebow will probably be taking over as the starting quarterback for the New York Jets. If Joe Namath was making that decision, however, Tebow would stay in his role as the QB’s assistant and third string quarterback Greg McElroy would step into the starting position.

Namath said that he was confused by the Jets quarterback situation and didn’t see Tebow as a starting quarterback.

Namath told ESPN :

“God forbid something happens to Sanchez. See, this is where I’m confused. I don’t think the second guy really is Tebow… Because you’re not gonna win consistently with the Wildcat offense unless Tim passes a lot better, maybe a little quicker.”

The NY Daily News reports that Tebow took eight snaps during the Jets’ first game of the season. He carried the ball five times for 11 yards and did not attempt a pass. If Tebow did decide to the throw the ball, chances are it would be incomplete. The former Bronco has a 47.3 percent completion rate.

Namath added:

“I don’t think he can consistently play the quarterback position as we know it as opposed to the Wildcat without improving his passing accuracy. You’ve got to be more accurate than that today, and Tim’s got a big motion. He’s working on it, and he can improve it. So that remains to be seen.”

But Joe wasn’t all critical of Tim Tebow. The Jets legend said that Tebow has an amazing work ethic and is a great guy to have on your team. He’s just not the guy you want to trust with the ball.

Namath said:

“Because of the guy he is, because of the aura he has around him. His work ethic. His sincerity… You want him as a teammate on your side. You want to find a place to use him. But teams have seen Tim play before — last year — they have to prepare to defend against a certain kind of offense if he’s on the field. It takes up their time. He’s a weapon just being there, let alone getting on the field to help.”

What do you think? Is Tim Tebow next in line for the starting position on the New York Jets?
