Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey may be happy and settled in their new lives, and roles as parents, but once upon a time they were one of the hottest couples in Hollywood. Back in 2003, the pair debuted their series Newlyweds soon after their wedding and continued filming until 2005. The couple eventually split in 2006, and both have moved on to marry other people.
Sue Kolinksy, who worked on all three seasons of the show, sat down to expose some of the secrets the pair held from their audience and what it was like to work for the once dynamic duo.
Konlinsky got the job after working on The Osbournes, which had aired shortly before Newlyweds. And according to Kolinsky, the show wasn’t as scripted as many people thought it was.
Although most fans of the show assumed Jessica Simpson was putting on her dumb blonde act, Kolinsky maintains that many of the moments the camera crew caught were pretty genuine. The famous “chicken or fish” moment, in which Jessica Simpson asked if tuna was chicken or fish after looking at the “Chicken of the Sea” label, was actually pretty genuine, insists Kolinsky.
She has also forged many friendships with those she worked on Newlyweds with and they were all very close, according to her.
Kolinsky, however, says that ultimately Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson were not well suited for one another romantically. She states that he was frugal and she had expensive taste. Kolinsky also says that Jessica Simpson’s father, Joe, was very involved in her life, which led to a few problems between the pair.
Joe Simpson evidently thought Jessica Simpson was far too young to be starting a family, though Nick, already in his 30s at the time, was interested in doing so from the start.
According to Kolinsky, the pair didn’t really have much in common except their music, and she said the tension on set toward the last season of filming was pretty palpable between the pair.
Nick Lachey is now married to Vanessa Minnillo and the pair share three children together. Jessica Simpson is married to Eric Johnson and has two children with him.
