Jennifer Lawrence has seemed to have grown weary of the X-Men character Mystique, implying that X-Men: Apocalypse might be the last time she commits to playing the blue-skinned mutant, but, until now, Jennifer hasn’t gone into detail about her decision.
“I love working with Bryan, and I love these movies,” Ms. Lawrence said . “It’s just the paint.”
In the beginning, Jennifer didn’t care about the paint, but Ms. Lawrence says that, after five years of playing Mystique in the X-Men films, the qualities of the paint have really started to affect her and irritate her senses. Jennifer says she’s much more bothered now by inhaling the “fumes and toxins. Now I’m almost 25 and I’m like, ‘I can’t even pronounce this and that’s going in my nose? I’m breathing that?’”
Jennifer could hardly be blamed for declining to return after playing the same character through so many years, particularly with the role exposing Ms. Lawrence to paint toxins as directly as the role requires. There’s no telling what affect the paints may be having on Jennifer in the long term and it may be best that Ms. Lawrence departs from the Mystique role, or perhaps asks that other technologies be used to give her the blue-skinned appearance.
Although the hazards involved with starring as Mystique have weighed heavily on Jennifer’s mind, Ms. Lawrence admitted that she can’t see herself saying good-bye to Mystique entirely. Jennifer said that idea of not being asked to return in future sequels is something Ms. Lawrence is not prepared to contemplate at this time.
“There is hope,” Jennifer said of the possibility of reprising her Mystique role .
Ms. Lawrence isn’t alone in her willingness to consider returning for future X-Men films. Both Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult have already expressed interest in reprising their roles for additional sequels.
As far as the creative team, there are currently no plans to reunite the cast for another X-Men sequel, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be anymore films in the franchise.
“I just wanna finish this movie and then figure out the next one,” Simon Kinberg, the writer and producer for X-Men: Apocalypse said. “But I do think about the next chapters of these stories. My hope is we can bring these guys back. And if we didn’t then I would adjust.”
X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled for a May 27, 2016, theatrical release.
