Jennifer Lacy was allegedly attacked by Chamique Holdsclaw, her former girlfriend and WNBA teammate, throwing the little-known player into the national spotlight.
As the WNBA suffers from miniscule ratings and low attendance, the average sports fan likely hadn’t heard of Jennifer Lacy before Tuesday’s assault. A forward for the Tulsa Shock, Lacy has been known as much for her looks as her on-court contributions.
She was named one of the hottest WNBA players by the sports blog Bleacher Report, and since the news of the assault several celebrity and gossip blogs have linked to pictures of the 29-year-old player.
Holdsclaw is accused of attacking Jennifer Lacy with a bat and gun, setting her car on fire. On Thursday night Holdsclaw turned herself in to police and remained in jail Friday on $100,000 bond.
The Jennifer Lacy assault has also brought more attention to Holdsclaw’s personal life. Holdsclaw has been vocal about her fight with clinical depression, which included a suicide attempt in 2006 while she was a member of the Los Angeles Sparks. As CBS News reported , Holdsclaw attempted an overdose of the medication she was taking for clinical depression.
Depression again affected Holdsclaw in 2004, when she was unable to leave her home for days after the death of the grandmother who raised her.
Though Lacy hasn’t given her side of the account, she did offer a statement to fans.
“I want to thank my family, friends, fans and Shock family for their concern during this difficult time. I have never felt more love from my fans in supporting me,” Jennifer Lacy said in a statement on the Shock’s website.
