Jennifer Alfonso was shot to death Thursday, and a picture of her crumpled body posted to Facebook, but the father of the accused killer said there may be more to the case than appears.
Jennifer’s husband, 31-year-old Derek Medina, is being held by police after the photo was posted to his Facebook page with what appeared to be a confession. The graphic photo showed Alfonso slumped on what appeared to be a kitchen floor, covered in blood. Next to the photo was the caption “RIP Jennifer Alfonso.”
“I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife,” a post on Derek Medina’s page read. “Love you guys miss you guys take care Facebook people you will see me in the news.”
Derek claimed that Jennifer was punching him, and he wasn’t going to take the abuse anymore. In an interview Thursday, Derek’s father said his son was in a life or death situation and reacted in self-defense .
“He just said that his wife picked up a knife on him, and they had a big fight, and he shot her,” said Derek Medina Sr.
A bizarre picture of Medina Jr. has emerged in the hours after the killing. He was a prolific and apparently obsessive writer of bizarre self-help books, which he published himself. The books had titles like World Just Ask Yourself Why We Are Living a Life Full of Lies and How I an Emotional Writer Made All of My Professional Dreams Come True Blocking Society’s Teachings.
One of the books appeared to be a guide to solving marital problems , titled How I Saved Someone’s Life and Marriage and Family Problems Thru Communication.
Neighbors also said the accused killer of Jennifer Alfonso was known to patrol local streets with a concealed gun as part of a neighborhood watch program.
“He walks around with a concealed gun, so he tries to be the neighborhood watch guy,” neighbor Yoshi Dade told NBC Miami. “He’s always there late (at) night, and he’s weird to me. He’s always kind of looking around and trying to be a hero.”
After the killing, Derek Medina turned himself in to Miami police, but they have not yet announce charges in the death of Jennifer Alfonso.
