Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to introduce a number of different characters in the DC Comics Universe, including the often ridiculed Aquaman. Although Aquaman, played by Jason Momoa , has been on the receiving end of numerous jokes over the years, Momoa has promised his version of the underwater hero will change all of that.

According to Entertainment Weekly , Momoa discussed how his character is constantly being derided during Fan Expo Canada, where he cautioned fans to withhold their insults until after the film.

“It’s cute and funny. People make fun of him. There’s a bunch of jokes about him, but I’m like, ‘Just wait. Let’s just wait a little bit, and then you can make jokes,’” Momoa stated.

Momoa went on to discuss how the backstory of Aquaman is one element that will be explored in the new film, which should offer plenty of twists and turns.

“The whole mythology of Aquaman is pretty amazing,” he explained in the interview. “There’s so many things to tell, and there’s a whole backstory that’s just amazing. There’s a lot of surprises coming. I think, yeah, he’s been cast aside [in the past]. But, um [laughs] times are going to change now, buddy.”

Jason Momoa also revealed that director Zack Snyder has managed to produce a version of Aquaman that is vastly different from what has been put forward in the past.

“We don’t want to just reinvent it, but [Zack Snyder has] got a whole idea of what Aquaman should be and I’m really honored to be playing it,” Momoa stated. “I’m excited for the world to see it.”

The appearance of Aquaman in the upcoming film is expected to only be the beginning of DC’s attempts to expand its cinematic universe. In fact, along with the appearance of Superman (Henry Cavill) and Batman ( Ben Affleck ), the new movie is also set to introduce Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

With that in mind, both Momoa and Gadot’s characters are expected to help usher in a number of upcoming films in the DC Comics Universe, including two Justice League films and a standalone Aquaman film.

The first Justice League movie is expected to be released in November of 2017, while the second part is set for a release in June of 2019. Meanwhile, Jason Momoa’s solo film, titled Aquaman , is scheduled for a premiere on July 27, 2018, and will be directed by James Wan.
