Jason Momoa Confirmed as Aquaman? Not So Fast!

DC Comics fans around the world were glued to their screens yesterday as news spread that Jason Momoa was confirmed as Aquaman in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice . Unfortunately, however, ComicBook.com reports that this is not entirely true.

The rumor that Momoa was confirmed as Aquaman spread like wildfire when someone posted a link to a nearly 2-month-old article in Variety that speculated as to the casting of the King of Atlantis. However, Warner Bros. has not officially announced that Momoa is confirmed as Aquaman.

Momoa, most recently seen on the big screen in the 2011 film Conan the Barbarian , was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised in Norwalk, Iowa. Like Aquaman, Momoa has a natural affinity for underwater wildlife; he attended college in Iowa as a marine biology major and studied in the Florida Keys.

If you like the idea of Momoa as Aquaman, keep in mind that the rumor may eventually prove to be true. Jason Momoa has been coy in recent interviews when asked if he’ll be playing Aquaman, leading several fans to speculate that Warner Bros. is simply keeping the casting under wraps to make the final announcement at the same time they announce Aquaman will be getting his own solo movie.

As any avid DC Comics fan knows, Aquaman has a reputation in many circles for being a slightly lame superhero. (This is actually a long-standing joke on the hit CBC comedy The Big Bang Theory .)

To combat negative viewer perceptions, Warner Bros. appears to be going out of its way to give Aquaman a makeover. If the rumor that Momoa is confirmed as Aquaman proves true, he’ll undoubtedly bring a warrior-like presence to the Atlantean/Human Hybrid. Momoa’s role as Khal Drogo, the fearsome leader of the Dothraki people on HBO’s Game of Thrones , was short lived but widely praised.

It also appears that Warner Bros. is taking precautions to ensure that their script ends up being as attention grabbing as possible. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Warner Bros. is developing two different Aquaman scripts. Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad have allegedly been hired to each produce a separate script. Beall previously worked on a version of the Justice League movie and Johnstad worked with Man of Steel director Zack Snyder on both 300 movies.

If there is a standalone Aquaman movie, it would likely be released in 2016 alongside Batman v. Superman or in 2017 to accompany that much rumored Justice League movie.

What do you think of the rumors that Jason Momoa has been confirmed as Aquaman?
