Is A ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ Reboot In The Works, Or Just ‘Wishful Thinking’?

A Xena: Warrior Princess reboot has been said to be in the works. However, Lucy Lawless, the star of the original series, could be the bearer of bad news.

The rumor that Lucy Lawless will be in it may have been proven false, though, so if it does happen, it may have a new star. This revelation comes from the original Xena actress herself, who tweeted Monday, “Sorry, friends! news of a [ Xena ] reboot is just a rumor. I’d love it to happen one day but it’s still in the wishful thinking stage.”

Is the reboot just wishful thinking, or just too early in production to be a solid plan yet? According to Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, and the Hollywood Reporter , the Xena: Warrior Princess reboot is definitely a possibility. The two, who invented the show in its first run 20 years ago, are planning a modern reboot which could see a more successful concept than the Percy Jackson live action films.

The Los Angeles Times claims that the original appearance of Xena was in the 1995 show Hercules: The Legendary Journeys , and was planned to be killed off in that first appearance. Her appearance was so popular that she ended up getting her own even more successful spin-off series.

Lucy Lawless had played the title role, an Amazon warrior who quested alongside Gabrielle (Renee O’Connor) to redeem herself from her past sins.

Despite the popularity of Xena’s solo adventures, the rumor of a big-screen film adaptation did become, as Lucy calls it, “wishful thinking.” Instead, Lawless has gone on to have cameos in other popular shows such as Battlestar Galactica , Marvel’s Agents of Shield , and Parks and Recreation .

If the show does get a modernized reboot as NBC is seemingly planning, it appears doubtful that Lucy Lawless will reprise her role, despite the Inquisitr having previously reported that she wants to bring the character back. Instead, it could simply be a 13-episode run, much like 24, instead of a full syndicated series.

For now, it’s too early to know for sure.
