Eight years ago, CES was blindsided as Apple introduced the very first iPhone . It wouldn’t become available until more than six months later, but the official announcement and press event was, perhaps, the most significant technological event in history. The iPhone changed everything. Even though there were smartphones before, Apple and Steve Jobs took the genre and turned it into something that changed the way we communicate.

On January 9, 2007, media outlets poured the iPhone’s announcement with praise and promise. Time certainly predicted how the iPhone would change the world.

“Apple’s new iPhone, which will be available in June, could do to the cell-phone market what the iPod did to the portable-music-player market: crush it pitilessly beneath the weight of its own superiority. This is unfortunate for anybody else who makes cell phones, but it’s good news for those of us who use them.”

The iPhone’s birthday is certainly a time to celebrate, but it also a time to memorialize its creator, Steve Jobs. Gadget Gestures describes how Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone back in 2007.

“Dressed up simply, in jeans, a black blouse and sneakers, Steve Jobs wanted to point out the change in the type of the processors he used: he promised Intel processors, which were very different and considerably faster than the old ones… He thanked everybody and got a big round of applause. His humor got a lot a feedback, as he talked about Microsoft, Macs and their grand success throughout the world.”

On June 29, 2007, there were huge lines everywhere at AT&T and Apple Store retail locations. Some of the lines went for blocks. Some people camped out for the iPhone for more than three days. Several blogs and news outlets, including Engadget, gave many iPhone updates that day.

“ San Francisco Apple Store, 12:18AM PDT – Things are definitely starting to pick up from the last time we stopped by; we’d estimate there are somewhere between 40 and 50 people in line. We know it’s iDay because there’s a scary, sunglass-clad dude looking out at the line from inside the store.”

As the iPhone celebrates its 8th birthday, several people on Twitter are showing their love.

The iPhone continues to be the most relevant smartphone eight years later. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are the two best-selling smartphones in every country they have been released in. What is your favorite iPhone memory? Tell us in the comments section.
