When the iPhone 4S was announced earlier this month, it wasn’t exactly received with open arms by most. Considering that everyone was expecting the announcement to be for the iPhone 5 , that response was to be expected.
Apparently, something changed after that initial letdown. Last week, we got word that Apple broke its previous pre-order record by a long shot – 1 million pre-orders over the previous record, 600,000. That’s not the only record Apple broke with the iPhone 4S launch, though.
Apple announced today that in a period of only three days, the iPhone 4S sold a jaw-dropping 4 million units. To put that into perspective for you, the iPhone 4S’ predecessor, the iPhone 4, managed a significantly less, yet still impressive 1.7 million units in three days.
The company attributes the iPhone 4S’ success to increased availability in countries around the world and additional carriers. The iPhone 4 launched in five countries simultaneously, whereas the iPhone 4S launched in seven – Japan, Australia, France, UK, Germany, Canada and the United States.
Additionally, Apple revealed that 25 million customers have upgraded their iOS device of choice to iOS 5 since it was released earlier this month, and over 20 million have signed up with Apple’s iCloud service.
“iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend-the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever.”
