Early Tuesday morning, two freight trains crashed in an head-on collision that derailed one train, left two persons suffering from minor injuries, and caused the closure of surrounding roads in the town of Marysville, Ohio, which lies just Northwest of Columbus.

It is being reported by the Marysville Police that it was at approximately 10 a.m. that the collision occurred. Ten of the train cars fell off the tracks and overturned during the derailment and caused a subsequent closure of Scottslawn Road in front of Scotts plant at Industrial Parkway.

According to WCMH-TV in Columbus, Marysville Assistant Deputy Chief Tony Brooks also reported that the two persons injured during the incident had been taken to Memorial Hospital to be treated and both were expected to be on the road to recovery very soon, and in fact both have already been treated and released. Chase J. Moore, 42, of Columbus and 49-year-old Lucas A. Barga of Grove City are crew members of CSX Transportation and had been on board the train when it crashed and derailed and their hospitalizations were said to have been more of a precautionary measure than any true concern of them being seriously injured.

A press release from CSX Transportation explained that the freight train had been on its way from Toledo to Columbus when it encountered a misaligned switch and went on to strike a stationary unit, overturning an engine and several of the train’s cars.

“CSX personnel and first responders are on site assessing the incident and working through an action plan. The top priority is the safety of the community, CSX employees and emergency responders. We appreciate the swift and professional support of first responders.”

The Weather Channel reported that visibility during the time of the derailment was good, but that it is not yet known at what speed the train had been travelling prior to the collision. Brad Gilbert, director of the Union County Emergency Management Agency advised that the train had only been carrying car parts and no hazardous materials were to be found in the area. Nonetheless, multiple emergency agencies had arrived on scene to assist with the investigations.

The Environmental Protection Agency was also at the scene of the derailment on Tuesday afternoon in order to oversee the clean-up of the oil that the train had spilled during its collision. Scottslawn Road will remain closed until officials have completed their activities at the Industrial Parkway in Marysville as some of the crumpled cars are blocking the roadway. Reports suggest that it might not reopen until Wednesday morning.

The investigation into the derailment continues.
