A husband shot a couple of bank robbers, and claims they kidnapped him and his wife.

Two bank robbery suspects in Columbus, Texas, were shot Thursday night, but not by police, as far as they knew. A man who claims the bank robbers kidnapped him and his wife, an employee of the bank in question, did the honors.

The Colorado County Sheriff’s Office says that the couple had been held at gunpoint in their homes and forced to drive the bank robbers to the First National Bank of East Lake. Sergeant Andrew Weido says that the woman was forced to withdraw an undisclosed amount from the bank, having prior knowledge that she was an employee, and had met her and her husband at their home to initiate the robbery.

When the husband who shot the bank robbers was forced to drive the truck, he then had access to the firearm used to wound the two men as they tried to flee down Highway 71. Officers responded to a 911 call at 7:30pm and when they arrived, they found the two men lying next to a pickup truck which had been parked in a ditch.

Jordan Kutach, 20, had been airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition. Preston Kutach, 21, was pronounced dead at Columbus Community Hospital. The bank employee and her husband are unharmed, but a little shaken up from the incident.

Resident Brenda Buehler said of the kidnapping, “I’m sure that they’re both going to be upset for a while. It’s a frightening thing to have happen, but I think everybody’s going to tell them good job.”

The husband who shot the bank robbers is a reserve officer with the Sheriff’s Department, as neighbors revealed. If anything, it was the bank robbers who ran out of luck not knowing that their chosen driver was a lawman.

Investigators say the couple did not know the bank robbers, who were discovered to be brothers, and it is unknown why the couple was targeted to help the Kutach brothers. Texas Rangers will be working with the Sheriff’s Office to look into the case further. For their own safety the couple’s names were not released.

What do you think of the husband who shot the bank robbers? How do you believe they were singled out for the crime?
