HP recently said that its webOS will live on as open source, but the company didn’t say exactly when that the source code was to be released.

Now, HP is ready to finally talk specifics on when it’s set to make the source code for webOS available to the open-source community. The company says that it will roll out the webOS code in phases, with the full thing expected to be released by the end of September.

The company is starting off the gradual roll-out with the release of the Enyo 2.0 source code, a webOS tool that allows developers to create apps that run on tablets, phones, and even desktop browsers, including Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.

“This is a decisive step toward meeting our goal of accelerating the platform’s development and ensuring that its benefits will be delivered to the entire ecosystem of Web applications,” Bill Veghte, HP’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer, said in a statement.

While the full, finalized webOS open source code won’t be made available until September, HP says that it aims to release a beta version to developers by August.
