Miley Cyrus is finally comfortable with revealing her true self with the world. The 22-year-old entertainer has revealed that she’s not only bisexual , but she’s also gender fluid. Now, the singer is revealing how she’s letting go of all of her fears and is living her life the way she wants. Miley doesn’t want to live according to the rules of life, or according to society’s expectations of one’s gender identity.
There’s no doubt that Cyrus has always been a hot topic of conversation. From her questionable twerking moves to her constant nudity and her armpit hair, the singer has been accused of her attention-seeking antics. Cyrus revealed that all of her crazy antics are to help bring a greater awareness to sexuality and gender identity . Some news outlets have said that Cyrus has quickly become one of Hollywood’s well-known role models for gender fluidity .
Miley has hinted that she has a “genderqueer” identity. In her interview with Out magazine, Miley talked about her struggle over relating to the male or female binary genders.
“I didn’t want to be a boy. I kind of wanted to be nothing. I don’t relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: Being a girl isn’t what I hate, it’s the box that I get put into.”
The “Wrecking Ball” singer also told Time magazine that she’s genderfluid, although she doesn’t directly label herself.
“I’m just equal. I’m just even. It has nothing to do with any parts of me or how I dress or how I look. It’s literally just how I feel.”
During her heartwarming speech at the amfAR Gala , Cyrus said that she doesn’t relate to a specific gender. She also doesn’t expect her romantic partners to do the same.
“I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.”
At the event, was Cyrus’ date was agender Tyler Ford, a contributing writer for Rookie Mag and MTV. Ford uses the pronoun “they” rather than “he” or “she” and expresses their gender in an ambiguous way, as previously reported via the Standard . The term “agender” means to express one’s gender outside of the male and female genders. Agender people like Ford use “they” and “their” pronouns, although gender terms can vary greatly among people.
Miley Cyrus insists that she stays 100 percent true to herself when it comes to her wacky performances or over-the-top Instagram posts. She doesn’t use an onstage persona like Lady Gaga or Sasha Fierce. Cyrus is happiest when she’s herself at all times, even on the stage.
“I’m not one of the people that goes, ‘I’m not what you see on TV,’ because I am exactly kind of what you see on TV. I am who I am, and you see what I’m doing, and I’ll never say, ‘Oh I’m so sorry I didn’t mean that.’ You make choices and sometimes they’re right, sometimes they’re wrong — just like in life. People try to make [me] seem out of control when, actually, I’m a pretty happy, centered person who does a lot of things for other people.”
What’s Miley’s advice for her fans? She says that they should stay true to themselves, at all times.
“This is who I am. I think it’s only hard if you’re trying to be something you’re not. Being who you are is really easy.”
Some parents may think Miley Cyrus may be a bad influence on kids and teenagers. On the other hand, she’s bringing up important issues when it comes to one’s sexuality and gender identity. Miley also knows the key to happiness, which is being true to one’s self.
