When news broke on New Year’s Eve that the world would be proceeding into 2015 without the presence of Edward Herrmann , social media fell into a wave of remembrance.

Although Herrmann had a long and storied career as an actor, there were two roles that appeared over and over again as he was remembered on social media.

Edward Herrman has died at 71. Great actor whose work I’ve really enjoyed over the years. “Lost Boys” a favorite…. http://t.co/Y76XKrChZi

I tweeted last night about what the cast of Gilmore girls had done for NYE & found out today that Edward Herrman passed yesterday. RIP ? — Jayma Winters (@JaymaDenice) January 2, 2015

These two roles spoke to two very different generations of viewers. The Lost Boys is a quintessential 80s movie, written in the days between when Anne Rice made vampires sexy again, long before Twilight made them vegetarians. Released in 1987, the movie’s tagline was

Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire.

Herrmann played the role of Max, the villain of the picture.

Richard Gilmore, grandfather to Rory and father to Lorelai on The Gilmore Girls , was a vastly different performance. Airing from 2000 to 2007, Herrmann’s performance is generally acknowledged as one of the highlights of the series. His kind, unfazeable, and sometimes painfully stubborn portrayal of Richard helped viewers understand the home that Lorelai had grown up in, yet at the same time, no one doubted that he loved all three of the Gilmore Girls deeply.

It’s also generally acknowledged that Herrmann, along with Kelly Bishop, stole every single scene he was in.

Whether you remember Herrmann as Max, Richard or someone entirely different, it’s more than clear that his presence will be missed.

Very sad about #EdwardHerrman ‘s death. #TheLostBoys and #BigBusiness defined my childhood & he was brilliant as #FDR (twice). #RIP ! #Sad

My friend Ed Herrmann was the kindest, classiest, most talented man. It was an honor and a joy to know him, a devastating blow to lose him.
