Let’s face it, when the police make the news, it’s too often not for anything good. But it’s important to be reminded that while the bad stuff may be what draws most of the headlines, the ordinary duties that police officers carry out every day are what really make our cops heroes . All you have to do is look, and you’ll see countless examples of what police men and women demonstrating what it really means “to protect and to serve.”

We came across this small, but touching example. In this little video, you’ll see an unidentified officer in the Eau Claire, Wisconsin, police department , making his usual rounds — when he spots a small group of his community’s most vulnerable, yet proudest members.

The officer, whose dashboard camera recorded this amusing little incident, is driving down Clairemont Avenue, a heavily trafficked, six-lane thoroughfare that runs through the city of about 66,000 in western Wisconsin, when he spies a family crossing the street on foot.

Now, normally, crossing a busy six lane street through traffic, away from a crosswalk, would merit a jaywalking ticket or at least a stern talking to. But the officer can’t bring himself to do that with this family — for the simple reason that this is a family of ducks.

Yes, it’s a mama duck leading her brood of ducklings, waddling across Clairemont. So what does this officer do?

Of course, he gets out of his vehicle, steps out into the street and halts traffic until Mama Duck and her little ones are safely to the other side.

Take a look at this video. We think it’ll bring a smile to your face, as well as remind and reassure you of the many good-hearted men and women who wear the blue uniform and protect us, as well as our fine feathered friends, every single day.
