Today is September 13th and you know what that means…. It’s Roald Dahl Day!

Fans of the “World’s No. Storyteller” will be celebrating the famous author’s birthday today. But this year’s Roald Dahl Day is extra special since it also marks the 30th anniversary of the author’s most famous book,The BFG.

According to the website :

“The official Roald Dahl Day takes place every year on 13 September, on the birthday of the World’s No. 1 Storyteller. In 2012 we are celebrating 30 years of the swizzfiggling Big Friendly Giant. The BFG is famous for catching, creating and making dreams come true. So this year we’re inviting you to Dream BIG with the BFG.”

The website is encouraging people to download the Roald Dahl Day Party Pack, which includes games, lessons, quizes, and dream jar labels. (You can download the Whizzpopping Party Pack here .)

In honor of the author’s birthday and the 30th anniversary of The BFG , fans will also get a chance to talk with Dahl’s favorite illustrator Quentin Blake and the author of the new Fantastic Mr Dahl book Michael Rosen. The live webcast will air on September 24th at 2 pm .

Dahl passed away in 1990 at the age of 74 but his books are still relevant today.

Michael Rosen told the Huffington Post :

“There’s two incredibly big reasons why (Roald Dahl is so special). One is that he had the most extraordinary and amazing life, but another is that his books are an amazing creative output. They’re a set of fabulous inventions. He was never content to write sequels and series. In that hey day period when he was writing a book a year nobody could predict or have any idea what would come out next. Then when somebody said he’d written a book of poems, nobody would know what the book of poems would look like or sound like. There was an element of the surprise and the fantastic, and when you look at his life there are aspects of it that are the same, of tragedy and heroism. He was inventive in how he carried on in his own life.”

Dahl is the author of classic stories like Matilda, The BFG, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , and The Twits . Do you have a favorite Roald Dahl book?
