Sara Ramirez may be most well known as Dr. Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy , but she cited her real life roles in speaking at a conference to address LGBTQ homelessness. Ramirez said she identified with those facing this epidemic, because she’s faced adversity due to her mixed race ethnicity, her religious faith, and her bisexual orientation. It was that last aspect of Sara’s personality that caught her fans off guard, because, until now, the Grey’s Anatomy actress had not publicly shared her sexual orientation.
Sara Ramirez Identifies With LGBTQ Youth
Homelessness is a rapidly growing problem facing many people, and as E! News reports, the recent True Colors: 40 to None Summit sought to address the problem among America’s LGBTQ youth in particular. Speaking at the conference, Sara Ramirez took the opportunity to share her thoughts on the issue and shared how it was a problem to which she felt especially connected. Ms. Ramirez opened her speech by recognizing that homelessness knows no boundaries, affecting people of every ethnicity, gender, faith, and sexual orientation.
“And, because of the intersections that exist in my own life: Woman, multi-racial woman, woman of color, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican and Irish sides, I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard, and that support our youth in owning their own complex narratives so that we can show up for them in the ways they need us to,” said Ms. Ramirez.
In the past, Sara says her sexual orientation has come into question, because her Grey’s Anatomy character is also bisexual. Ms. Ramirez has been married to Ryan DeBolt since 2011.
Sara revealed that she received hate mail over her Grey’s Anatomy role and for her public support of the LGBTQ community.
Following the speech made by Ramirez, The True Colors Fund took to Twitter to express their gratitude and support for Sara.

Loserville Producer Sara Ramirez Takes A Stand Against Bullies
At its heart, Loserville is a comedy and a family drama, one which focuses on high school senior Chuck MacDonald (Chris Bellant), as he faces the humiliations of a mother dating his gym teacher, a seemingly uninterested true love, and a sex tape that makes its rounds among Chuck’s classmates. While Loserville is filled with humor, Ramirez tells Parade that the film also deals with serious topics like bullying, identity, and self-expression.
“I think it really will resonate, and it’s a very inclusive cast, I’m proud to say, and so I’m just really excited about it,” says Ms. Ramirez.
Sara Ramirez joined MarVista Entertainment, because she feels strongly about sending a positive message to today’s youth, many of whom face frequent instances of bullying and harassment.
Ms. Ramirez was joined on Loserville by Darby Stanchfield, who also feels that bullying is a universal problem that needs to be addressed in creative ways. Stanchfield says Ramirez was already attached to the project when she joined the cast, though she didn’t know it at the time. Darby was thrilled to learn she would be working with Ramirez as producer and her Loserville co-star, Matt McGorry.
“I really related to Chuck because he had a couple of friends, but he becomes empowered by reaching out and connecting with people and becoming at home with who he is,” says Stanchfield. “I feel like his journey is done in a very real way, and I connected to that in terms of challenges I had in high school.”
