Gravity is already a favorite among critics and now it’s proving to be a hit with audiences. The new movie starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney set a new record this weekend for an October release.

According to NBC, Gravity brought in $55.6 million during its first three days in theaters. That’s the most in blockbuster history for an October movie.

Warner’s domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman said:

“In two days, this movie has become a cultural phenomenon. People that haven’t gone to the movies in years, or who only see one or two movies a year, are going to see Gravity.”

It’s not too surprising to see Gravity at the top of the box office. The movie has been hyped by several directors and actors over the last few weeks and several critics have already handed next year’s Academy Award to Sandra Bullock.

The movie currently has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Christy Lemire writes :

“Believe the hype: Gravity is as jaw-droppingly spectacular as you’ve heard – magnificent from a technical perspective but also a marvel of controlled acting and precise tone.”

Here’s a trailer for Gravity.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatblls 2 couldn’t stop Gravity but the animated movie is still bringing in a lot of ticket sales. The movie, which opened with $34 million, added another $21 million this weekend. Justin Timberlake’s Runner Runner finished third at the box office with $7.6 million ahead of Prisoners and Rush.
