In the new DC/Warner Bros. series Gotham, Ben McKenzie plays Detective Jim Gordon – eventual police commissioner and friend of Batman. Unfortunately for Ben, acting in Gotham can sometimes be just as dangerous as actually fighting crime in Batman’s city.

Yesterday, while shooting a scene for Gotham where Detective Gordon was engaged in “fisticuffs” with a villain, Ben McKenzie suffered a gash on his forehead, according to Deadline . Apparently, McKenzie smacked his head on a pillar, causing him to post “Holy concrete wall, Batman!” on his Instagram account along with pictures of the injury.

Ben McKenzie was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital to get stitched up. He just celebrated his 36th birthday on Monday.

The Gotham star wrote the following caption for this picture. “Doc Sherman at New York-Presbyterian, you are a career saver. Thanks for stitching me up nice. Back to work Monday. #gotham”

“Happy Birthday to me. Fight sequence gone awry. Don’t ram your head into concrete pillars kids. #gotham”

As Ben McKenzie alluded to in the second picture, the injury is not so bad that the actor won’t miss any work on the new Batman-prequel show – in fact, the character of Gordon wouldn’t look strange with a wound on his forehead considering he’s a detective in the infamous Gotham City.

Gotham takes us back in time before Batman existed, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In fact, during the events of the show, Bruce Wayne is only an elementary school kid. The show not only looks at the start of Jim Gordon’s and Batman’s careers, it also looks at the formations of the villainous careers of Gotham’s notorious underworld.

Ben McKenzie, Robin Taylor and Camren Bicondova in ‘Gotham’

In addition to Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon, Gotham features Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock, Jada Pinkett Smith as Gotham crime boss Fish Mooney, Sean Pertwee as the Wayne family butler, Alfred, Robin Taylor in a riveting performance of Oswald Cobblepot, the teen who will become the Penguin, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, the puzzle-loving youth who will grow up to be the Riddler, and Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, AKA Catwoman. Jon Beavers plays the role of a character called “The Comedian,” leading many to anticipate his rise as The Joker.

Fox has the utmost confidence in Gotham as they’ve already greenlit three seasons of the show. Warner Bros. has also made a deal with Netflix to carry seasons of Gotham after they’ve aired, all before the show has aired its pilot episode.

Gotham – featuring Ben McKenzie’s stitched-up head – premieres September 22nd on Fox.
