The King of the Monsters will be stomping back into theaters, and though fans will have to wait until 2018 to see Godzilla thrash his next city, he won’t be doing it alone.

According to The Wrap , Godzilla 2 , the as-yet-untitled sequel to Gareth Edwards American reboot of the Godzilla franchise, will be heading to theaters in the summer of 2018. The June 8 date, which was announced by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. on Thursday, is a double edged sword for fans; though Godzilla garnered a sequel, it’s still a long way off. When the iconic monster returns in three years, however, he won’t be the only threat on screen.

Director Gareth Edwards is returning to helm Godzilla 2, the Tech Times reports. More interesting, however, are the details that Edwards has already revealed about the direction that the film may take. According to him, Godzilla 2 will see the return of some other classic Toho kaiju as well.

In the sequel, Godzilla will reportedly go up against foes from the classic Japanese series. Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah are all making an appearance in Godzilla 2 , as The Inquisitr previously noted. The film will be the first time that these classic Toho monsters appear in an American Godzilla film. Edward’s 2014 reboot saw Godzilla squaring off against MUTOS, a never before encountered monster, while Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich’s much maligned 1998 production involved solely Godzilla.

Edwards is tied to one of the Star Wars spin off movies that will go into production as a part of Disney’s embrace of the franchise, which will be released in December 2016. Following that project, Edwards will be turning his attention to Godzilla 2 . His reboot of the franchise fared well at the box office, bringing in $507 million during the course of its worldwide theatrical run.
