Glee may be ending after its sixth season, Fox Entertainment Chairman Kevin Reilly said Thursday.
“I would not anticipate it goes beyond two more seasons,” Reilly said Thursday . “Never say never, but there’s two very clear [story] arcs to get to that end and conclude. Listen, if we discover a new crop of kids and there’s some breakout, who knows? But right now we’re thinking about two seasons.”
Reilly also said that Cory Monteith’s death would be addressed in season five, and that his character Finn would be written out in the third episode .
“That is the episode where Cory’s character will be written out and will deal directly with drug addiction and with the circumstances surrounding Cory’s death,” he said. Reilly also said that the writers were still working out how to write Finn’s death into the show,
Series co-creator Ryan Murphy and the cast will shoot PSAs about substance abuse to air during commercial breaks. Murphy previously told E! Online that he almost thought about pulling the plug on the series after Monteith’s death, but decided against it.
“But the thing that we ultimately found was that our cast and crew wanted to be together, they wanted to go back to work, they wanted to sort of be in a place where they could all remember and discuss Cory sooner than later,” he said. Murphy also gave Monteith’s girlfriend, Lea Michele, the chance to leave the show early if she wanted.
Cory Monteith was found dead in a hotel room in Vancouver on July 13. The cause of death was determined to be from a “mixed drug toxicity” of heroin and alcohol, and appeared to be accidental.
Glee was renewed for a fifth and sixth season on April 19. The fifth season premieres September 26 with a planned Beatles’ tribute. Episode two will also be a Beatles’ tribute and Monteith’s last episode, “Goodbye Finn,” will air October 10.
