Gina Gershon is a gay icon, even if she herself isn’t gay. She doesn’t mind the gay following, however, and says the LGBT community contains some of the nicest people she’s ever known.
So how did Gina Gershon become a gay icon? It all started with a cult favorite called Showgirls . She played a lesbian named Cristal Connors, and apparently she was extremely good in the role, even making what was probably an accidental reference to her upcoming TV movie House of Versace almost as a byline. She played the role with strength and integrity, not like you might expect from someone merely playing lesbian. Gina Gershon quickly followed up with her portrayal of a lesbian once again as Corky in Bound .
Gina Gershon had the movie audiences fooled so well that she literally had to “come out” as straight.
Gay icon Gina Gershon opened up to Larry King about her status among the gay community:
“I think gays like me because of Showgirls and because of Bound, those two movies … I dunno, spoke to them and they liked me from there. And I think gays – when you have them as a fan base, they are loyal, extremely loyal – I think after that, they were there.”
That would certainly explain the fame Tim Curry received after Rocky Horror Picture Show where he played a transsexual transvestite from Transylvania, a role he has said he regretted playing ever since. Gina Gershon, on the other hand, loves the attention she gets from gays everywhere, and she’s proud of it.

Gay icon Gina Gershon said that preparing for the role of Donatella in House of Versace involved listening to Donatella Versace almost nonstop, even falling asleep listening to her. She says she hopes the movie will give the character subtitles, as Donatella Versace apparently blurred her words together much like rock icon John “Ozzy” Osbourne.
Gina Gershon’s gay icon status from her lesbian roles may even get an homage when she appears in House of Versace . Who knows?
