Even a snowstorm didn’t freeze the box office sales for Disney’s Frozen . However, it did diffuse the sparks flying around The Hunger Games: Catching Fire . After three long weeks of dominance at the box office, Catching Fire has officially been knocked down to the No. 2 slot.

With the extreme winter weather freezing nearly half of the United States, Frozen , was quite befitting in alignment with the nationwide freeze. According to Time Entertainment , the film’s theatrical success broke the Catching Fire sales streak garnering more than $31.6 million, which equates to a three-week sales total of $134.3 million.

The ever-popular Disney animated film is centered around the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale entitled, The Snow Queen . The featured voice-over artists for the main characters are Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff. The storyline is about Princess Anna’s (Bell) quest to find her sister, Elsa (Groff). Elsa’s supernatural ice powers have their kingdom locked into an eternal winter season.

Although Frozen edged ahead of Catching Fire this week, the Hunger Games installment still managed to bring in an impressive $27 million, with a cumulative domestic gross of approximately $336.7 million over its three-week release span.

Thriller film Out of the Furnace landed in the distant No. 3 slot. The Leonardo DiCaprio and Ridley Scott-produced film, which stars Christian Bale, Zoe Saldana, and Forest Whitaker opened with box office sales of $5.3 million.

Box Office Mojo also furnished a detailed report for the top 10 box office films for the week. The numbers are estimates based on box office sales from Wednesday, Dec. 4 through Sunday, Dec. 8.

1. Frozen : $31.6 million

2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire : $27 million

3. Out of the Furnace : $5.3 million

4. Thor: The Dark World : $4.7 million

5. Delivery Man : $3.8 million

6 . Homefront : $3.4 million

7. The Book Thief : $2.7 million

8. The Best Man Holiday : $2.67 million

9. Philomena : $2.3 million

10. Dallas Buyers Club : $1.5 million

This week’s sales should also be relatively interesting. With the highly anticipated releases of Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, it will be quite interesting where Frozen will end up on the box office list for the week of Dec. 13.
