Frozen 2 has no official release date at this moment, but the film has already created a buzz across the internet. Over the past few months, hundreds of fans are taking over social media to express their wish to see a lesbian Elsa. Now, Idina Menzel has supported the fans as she recently spoke during her red carpet appearance at 2016 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight , the “Let It Go” singer stated that it would be a great idea to let Queen Elsa have a female love interest in the upcoming musical sequel of Frozen .

“I think it’s great. Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out,” she said.

Menzel added that Elsa and Frozen have changed her life, and she will always support the studio’s decision.

The thought of Elsa having a girlfriend was brought to light by Feminist Culture founder Alexis Isabel Moncada on Twitter. Moncada tweeted to Disney to create a first ever lesbian character.

After tweeting about her wish to see first animated lesbian queen, Moncada also wrote a piece for MTV News , where she revealed that when she was a child she never saw a princess falling in love with another princess .

“The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees. But we’ve never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship.”

After Moncada’s tweet, several of the movie’s admirers and LGBT supporters signed an online petition requesting Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend.

Given the history of movie’s sensational song “Let It Go,” one can assume that the studio might consider creating its first LGBT character. The Oscar-winning song was viewed by many evangelical pastors and commentators as Elsa’s desire to come out in front of the society and accept her sexuality. However, during an interview with Yahoo Movies , Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee was asked about her perception of homosexuality. The filmmaker stated that Disney has created the movie for the viewers and it is up to them only to perceive it the way they want.

At the same time, there are a lot of fans and concerned parents who think that showing their kids a lesbian character at this stage is not the right decision. Earlier this month, a petition was filed on CitizenGo.org, in which more than 200,000 fans have signed against Moncada’s wish to see Disney’s first lesbian character. Many of the fans have stated that they do not want some animated film to teach their children about LGBT.

“We’re suggesting a much better idea… An idea that promotes solid family values to our children and represents the natural family.”

Meanwhile, Frozen’s co-director Chris Buck also seems to support the idea of a lesbian Elsa. During an interview with MTV News , Buck revealed that the writing team is surely going to use the upcoming sequel to talk about social issues.

“When the kids [watch] them, they watch them over and over again, and if we don’t have a decent message in there, I think we’ve missed an opportunity.”

Frozen is Disney’s most powerful movie in recent times. The film differs from Disney’s earlier films where a charming prince will save a princess. Instead, the musical drama showed the power of women and how they can change the world. As for now, Disney has yet to announce any details regarding Frozen 2 .
