A second Friday Night Lights movie doesn’t seem likely, according to movie and TV series creator Peter Berg.
Berg told Collider that his feelings about a followup to the NBC series have changed .
“There’s not gonna be a movie,” he said. “We talked about it, some people thought it was a good idea, some didn’t; I’ve come to believe it’s probably not a good idea and I seriously doubt it’s gonna happen.”
While Friday Night Lights started off as a movie based on the novel of the same name by H.G. Bissinger, the second film would have followed the 2006 series, which ran for five seasons. The 2004 film starred Billy Bob Thornton as the coach of an Odessa, Texas football team called the Permian Panthers. The series starred Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor and Connie Britton as his wife, Tami, and took place in the fictional town of Dillon, but kept the Panthers name from the film and novel. The TV adaptation also kept the intensity of the town’s love for football.
In October, Connie Britton told Watch What Happens Live ‘s Andy Cohen that she was on board for a Friday Night Lights movie , but Kyle Chandler wasn’t.
“I love the idea! I think it’d be a great idea. But my former husband…,” she said.
“He thinks you did it already,” Cohen said. Britton agreed before adding, “We’d only do it if it was a great movie.”
Britton also said, “There’s been a lot of talk about a lot of things. Some people are really excited about it and some people aren’t.”
In a June interview with Entertainment Weekly , Scott Porter, who played paralyzed quarterback Jason Street, said, “I’d put 50/50 odds on it. I’m so scared we would never be able to top the show. And I wouldn’t want what we did together tarnished in any way.”
