Ford Set To Sell 2.2 Million Cars This Year

Ford Motor Company is set to sell 2.2 million cars in 2012, according to an announcement by the American automaker on Saturday.

While they are excited about the sales achievement, the company also acknowledge that it is losing market share as it struggles to keep up with consumer demand for the product.

Yahoo! News notes that 2012 is the second straight year that Ford’s sales have surpassed the two million mark, providing hope that it is a sign of the company recovering, as well as the economy.

The sales projection of 2.2 million still falls short of the auto industry’s overall gains this year, which is expected by some analysts to be higher than 13 percent for the 2012 year.

Despite Ford’s struggles to keep control of their market share, this is the third year in a row that the industry’s sales have climbed by more than 10 percent.

Automakers have spent the last four years recovering from a deep recession that pushed General Motors Co and Chrysler Group LLS into bankruptcy in 2009.

The Chicago Tribune notes that Ford was able to avoid bankruptcy, but still struggled during the tough economy.

The American automaker announced earlier this year that it expected to lose market share in the United States for 2012 because of an overwhelming demand. They were not able to build enough cars and trucks to satisfy demand. They also noticed that consumers are choosing to buy less pickup trucks this year than in past years.

Ford sold just under 2.1 million cars in 2011 under its main brand. When its upscale Lincoln brand is added, however, the automaker sold more than 2.1 million.
