The first footage from Marvel’s upcoming The Avengers: Age of Ultron was revealed to an enthusiastic audience of nearly 7,000 at San Diego Comic-Con, stoking fan excitement for what is sure to be one of next summer’s biggest films.

The Avengers footage was screened to the crowd gathered in Hall H for Marvel’s Saturday panel, according to The Hollywood Reporter . The clip begins with the Avengers gathered in Stark Tower, lounging around and taking turns trying to lift Thor’s hammer as he mocks them. The Norse god of thunder looks worried as Captain America almost succeeds in picking up the weapon, before a battle-scarred version of Ultron walks into the room.

“The path to peace … is with your extinction,” the mechanical villain says, before an action-packed montage of footage that had Avengers fans in the hall cheering. The clip showed Stark outfitting himself in his “Hulkbuster” armor, which The Inquisitr previously reported would be revealed in the film, before going toe-to-toe with his Avengers teammate. According to Moviefone , the footage also revealed that Age of Ultron has some exciting surprises in store:

“Amongst the more memorable moments: the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) displaying her uncanny magic abilities on a subway train (or something like it), another shot of her brother, Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in hyper-extended slow motion as he races through a battle, and an even-quicker glimpse of Andy Serkis, with a goatee, playing an as-yet-unidentified character.”

The final shot of the preview footage revealed actor Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, surveying the “the galactic wasteland of some destroyed planet,” surrounded by the rest of the Avengers as they lay dead at his feet. The sequence, which may allude to the powers of Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlett Witch, also showed Captain America’s shield, battle-damaged and broken.

Before the footage was shown, the cast of the Avengers sequel was brought out one at a time. Robert Downey Jr. tossed flowers into the audience before saying “I become a little less significant every time,” referencing the growing cast of The Avengers . Director Joss Whedon was not on hand, having undergone knee surgery.

Chris Helmsworth, when asked if there was anything he’d like to do with the character of Thor that hasn’t yet been tried, quipped that he’d like to portray the thunder god as a woman. “I don’t want to speak too early but I think it could be my Oscar,” he said, referencing the hotly debated change to the comic series that Marvel announced last week.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released on May 1st, 2015.
