A Faulkner University shooting has left a woman fighting for her life after her husband shot her on campus in the middle of the day.
Police in Montgomery, Alabama, said the Faulkner shooting took place near a maintenance building and that no students were in danger. Medics rushed the victim to the hospital with life-threatening injuries .
The shooting prompted school officials to place the campus on lockdown, and some students received a text message that read: “(Active Shooter on Campus) Emergency! Armed person on campus. Go to nearest room and lock door. If off campus, do not enter campus. Follow instructions from auth.”
But a number of students and faculty never received the message, however, and Faulkner officials are now looking into how the alert system may have failed.
The man accused of shooting his wife has been arrested and is now facing attempted murder charges, police said.
Witnesses who saw the Faulkner shooting said a man wearing a red shirt and black pants walked up to the woman and gunned her down.
“She tried running away and she was just shot more,” said student Saul Calderon-Zavala. “And he got into his car and drove off.”
Faulkner officials later released a statement about the shooting, saying that classes were returning to their normal schedules.
“In what appears to have been a domestic situation, a contract employee was injured in the shooting and has been taken to a local hospital for treatment. Her condition is not known at this time,” school officials noted. “The Montgomery Police Department is following up on the incident. At no time were any students involved in the incident. Faulkner University asks everyone to be in prayer for the victim and offers its sincere gratitude to campus security and law enforcement officers for their rapid response.”
Police have not yet named the victim in the Faulkner shooting or the accused shooter.
