Facebook TOS Vote: Tiny Turnout, Results May Not Be Binding

Facebook opened the doors for its users to help decide on the site’s terms of service — but with the week-long voting window winding down, it looks like the results may not end up counting.

Facebook allowed users to comment on its policies following the backlash over a change in user data ownership back in February. Last Thursday, it opened a public vote in which users could select either the service’s old terms document or the newly revised code, which took community comments into consideration.

From the start, Facebook said 30 percent of its active userbase would need to participate for the vote to be considered binding. With an estimated 200 million active users, that’d be about 60 million votes needed.

As of 9 a.m. ET today, just over 623,000 users had voted — less than 1 percent of the active userbase.

The voting closes at 11:59 a.m. PT today. Results and the subsequent plan of action are expected to be announced sometime tomorrow.
